Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.

— DEUTERONOMY 6:4–5 NIV

This famous passage is part of the “Shema” prayer, which Jewish children learn from the earliest age. The Hebrew word shema means “Hear, O Israel” (Deuteronomy 6:4–5 NIV). Jesus’ mother, Mary, and her husband, Joseph, would have recited the Shema with Him twice daily: once in the morning and again as a bedtime prayer. Mary and Joseph followed the command to teach their children about God’s love and rules for living: “Talk about them when you sit at home and walk along the road. . . . Write them on your doors and gates” (Deuteronomy 6:7–9).

To this day, faithful Jews attach to their doorframes a small cylinder-shaped case containing a tiny parchment scroll with words from Deuteronomy. It’s called a mezuzah (meh-zoo-zah), which comes from a Hebrew word meaning “doorpost.”
